Case Introduction
Regular blowdown expansion tank
The periodic blowdown expansion tank reduces the pressure and expands the volume of boiler blowdown water, thereby separating secondary steam from waste hot water. The secondary steam is discharged to the atmosphere or utilized as a heat source, while the waste hot water is typically routed to an effluent cooling pond and then discharged into the groundwater system.
Continuous Blowdown Expansion Tank
The continuous blowdown expansion tank is connected to the boiler’s continuous blowdown outlet and serves to reduce the pressure and expand the volume of the boiler’s continuous blowdown before discharge. The secondary steam is routed through a dedicated pipeline, typically to the deaerator, while the waste hot water is automatically discharged via a float‑type level control valve or an overflow‑adjustment valve, usually into a fixed‑drain expansion tank, allowing the thermal energy to be recovered and reused. The continuous blowdown flow rate is automatically adjusted in response to changes in the boiler feedwater load, maintaining a relatively stable blowdown rate. By utilizing the secondary steam and waste hot water as heat sources, a portion of the heat lost in the boiler’s continuous blowdown can be recovered, thereby improving boiler efficiency.
Structure and Its Function
The expansion vessel consists of a main body, auxiliary components, and other parts. The main body comprises a cylindrical shell, elliptical end caps, a manhole, and internal fittings; the internal fittings include wear‑resistant devices, cooling water inlet assemblies, and overflow devices.
